Stephanie Duston is working on her PhD at Virginia Tech studying soils. Given her soil background, naturally, she fell in love with clay and has pursued ceramics as her primary art “hobby” since 2016. The focus of her work is to make functional pieces for everyday use. She loves adding tactile feel to her work, so most of her pieces are carved and textured in some way, with matte and glossy glaze painted on in layers. She has also been playing with underglaze designs as well!
You can find a small selection of her pottery at the store year-round.
Made with few, carefully selected ingredients, Shine Your Light’s soy wax candles last longer than most candles. Stephanie also makes a fantastic sugar scrub, bath bombs and wax melts.
Christiansburg Institute was a school for African Americans in Christiansburg from 1866-1966. Beginning in 2018, the Christiansburg Institute and Montgomery Museum of Art & History staff began to organize and take meaningful action in order to preserve and increase awareness about Montgomery County's deeply rich African American history and culture. The group set out to do this work by determining a set of shared values that would guide the project; truth-telling, honesty, and reconciliation, specifically around challenging and contested histories where generational harm and racial trauma is ongoing and narratives are competing. The desired outcome of the work will be to erect three new history and educational storyboards in Downtown Christiansburg.

As a business also heavily focused on supporting local, it only makes sense to us to support the telling of black history locally; the telling of stories that haven’t been told enough.
